EQ...WHAT IS IT?
Emotional intelligence, or Emotional Quotient (EQ), is defined as the ability of an individual to identify, evaluate, control and express emotions. People with a high EQ usually achieve high levels of personal and professional success and recognition, or may become great leaders and/or elite athletes because of their ability to understand, empathize and connect with the people around them. The traditional Intellectual Quotient, or IQ, is a score derived from one of several standardized tests designed to assess the academic intelligence of an individual.
It would be absurd to suggest that cognitive ability is irrelevant to success, for example, in fields such as science. One needs a relatively high IQ to be admitted to scientific programs. But, once they are admitted, what matters in terms of how they perform compared to their peers has less to do with differences in IQ and more with social and emotional factors, that is, with their EQ. To put it another way, if you are a scientist, you probably need an IQ higher than 120. But to stay there and get along with superiors and subordinates the IQ by itself is not enough.
